|We about ourselves|
Dear visitor of our homepage,
you may be a newcomer in Berlin or you may take an interest in us for other reasons. Perhaps you've found our homepage while surfing through the internet ... In any case we would like to introduce ourselves briefly to you:
We, the catholic parish of St. Laurentius, located right in the heart of Berlin, are a very young community, because, strictly speaking, we were founded on 1 November 2003.
Nevertheless we are a parish which has its history and its tradition. To be quite precise, we are a community with two histories and two traditions, namely that of the former parish of St. Ansgar in Berlin-Tiergarten, founded in 1926, and that of the original parish of St. Laurentius in Berlin-Tiergarten, founded in 1910.
Already before the merger the elected representatives of the two former parishes understood that the new unit had to be more than the sum of its parts. Therefore they decided to hold a "conference of the future" in order to prepare the growing together of the united community.
On 26 and 27 September 2003 almost 50 representatives of the two parishes of St. Ansgar and St. Laurentius, who formed an authentic average of the parish members, met under the motto "The future is the land nobody can claim". What shall we give up, what shall we together preserve, and, above all, what shall we further develop - these were the questions to which answers were formulated in open, passionate, constructive and democratic discussions and actions.
On 1 November 2003 the two parish communities merged to form a new and larger community. This new parish now comprises wide parts of the area west of the Brandenburg Gate and to the north a large part of Moabit, reaching up to the Westhafen. It has about 5.000 members.
Since the old parish of St. Laurentius in Moabit was the older of the two communities, also the newly formed parish community was given the name of this deacon and martyr of early christianity. The church of the new parish, however, is St. Ansgar's church, the parish church of the former community of St. Ansgar, which was built in Berlin-Tiergarten in 1957. This church has an important place in the history of architecture and can conveniently be reached.
On 1 January 2007 St. Laurentius' church, which is situated in Bandelstraße, was leased to "Christ Embassy". At this place there is still our day nursery and nursery school.
On 1 October 2005 Dr. Ernst Pulsfort became our parish priest.
